Joshua’s first test!

I have been freaking out about all of this homework Joshua has been brining home. He has to try to learn 30 words which 10 are spelling 10 more come from a reading folder and the other 10 are sight words. I was for sure starting to believe that I was going to have a melt down right along with his homework meltdowns. Crying, crying and more crying. I could’nt blame him one minute you’re in Kindergarten having the time of your life and then all of a sudden all of this.

His first practice test was last Thursday 10 words and 1 sentence including punctuation. The children that made 100% on Thursday would not have to take the test that Friday. I knew he knew the words. He could spell them out loud but putting them on paper was a little harder for him.

Joshua came home on Thursday put his bag down pulled the folder out and gave me his 100% test. YES 100%. of course I gave him so much praise and told him that he wouldn’t have to take the test Friday, which made him happy. This week has been so much easier getting him to study and do his homework.

I am just amazed that first grade is so different then what it used to be and the expectations are so high. Anyway, I am just really proud of my little man!!!!

  1. That praise you gave him is so important. Good job! My granddaughter began to listen to the first relaxation on the CD in the first grade.
First I let her know that when humans get nervous they stop breathing…which doesn’t get oxygen to our brains – so we don’t think as good! I told her (and it’s true) that before tests or any activity that makes her nervous in school, to use her oxygen as a secret weapon and take a few breaths. I let her know it would calm her and also make her think better for her tests and such. Children are so pliable. She practiced and is doing great now.- 3rd grade.
Last year she taught CPR for show and tell! You might give it a shot.
Children have the right to know about empowerment through using our brains and using oxygen. Have a beautiful day, my friend!

  2. Yay, Josh! Tell him his auntie is so proud of him! You always said he would be the brains of the family, right? lol

I really liked the comment Marsha made- she’s so right… we sometimes don’t think about things we do/use ourselves as adults as being good tools for kids, as well. Especially in today’s day and age with so many pressures and stress placed on our kids.

Anyway- I’ll save an extra hug for Josh tomorrow! :)

  3. I am really proud of him.

Marsha that is a great idea about letting the kids listen to your CD I will have to give that a whirl.

We will see how things go today he had another pre-test today. He is having a hard time with the world black….he keeps messing up on the l. Either way even if he doesn’t get a 100% I am still proud of him, at least he is trying and working on his words every night without the meltdown THANK THE LORD.

I didn’t know how much more I could deal with when it comes to homework meltdowns. Between Devin, Mandy and Joshua it gets a little overwhelming at times.

  4. Don’t forget to teach him to use breathing to calm down before tests or homework. He’s young enough to listen and take full advantage of our natural gifts. I had to breath fairly regularly last week – my laptop died. I couldn’t get to my desk computer – and my husband erased all email I hadn’t read! Oh well, such is life! I’m proud of your little man too!
